Keys Icon Needs a New Home!!!

It’s an iconic Upper Keys figure…big and gray, sporting red suspenders and a polka dot bandana.  And it can be yours! Mickey Rat, the landmark which relaxed atop the roof of his Mickey Rats Bilge Bar at Holiday Isle’s Marina, is in need of a new home.

Due to the forethought and generosity of Holiday Isle’s Ed Kinkelaar and Stuart Newmark, Mickey Rat was saved from permanent burial and given to Treasure Village Montessori (TVM), a public charter school, in hopes of finding a new permanent home in the Florida Keys community.

To raise money for their art, music and other cultural programs, TVM is auctioning Mickey Rat to the highest bidder. E-mail bidding runs Friday, Jan 1st  through Friday, Jan 8th at 8 p.m.  Bids may be submitted to mickeyrat@bellsouth.net. Daily updates of bid status will be sent to all bidders as well as real-time updates being sent during the last hour of bidding on January 8th .  Bidding may extend beyond 8 p.m., if necessary, until the lone highest bid is made.  Information on reserve minimum bid, payment terms, and delivery may be requested from mickeyrat@bellsouth.net.

Mickey Rat kept watch over the Holiday Isle Fishing Fleet for years.  The current sculpture was created in 1993 by artist Richard Blaise.  Mr. Blaise also was the creator of Betsy the Lobster that lived for many years at Treasure Village and recently moved to the Rain Barrel Artisans’ Village and the giant conch shell created for Holiday Isle’s Hard Conch Café.  His conch shell now welcomes guests at Theater of the Sea.

Proceeds from the auction of Mickey Rat benefit Treasure Village Montessori, a tuition-free charter school for pre-kindergarteners through eighth graders.

Slow Season in The Keys - Head on Down for Value!!!

As always, things slow way down in the Fall here in the Florida Keys.  It is a reality our local businesses live with (and through) on an annual basis.

While it is tough for us, it is a great time for visitors to come down and enjoy everything the Keys has to offer at the best prices of the year.

Craig's Restaurant in Tavernier is a great example.    It is one of the places the "locals" go to eat.  It is famous for it's fish sandwich.

It is always a good value, but this time of the year, they have a coupon program that offers 10% off lunch and 20% off dinner.

So if you live in Florida or are just visiting, hop on the Turnpike south till you hit the Overseas Highway and enjoy a weekend here in paradise.

Latest at Upper Keys Rotary: Building Affordable Housing in the Florida Keys

Great update at the Upper Keys Rotary meeting today from Rick Casey of the Middle Keys Community Land Trust which builds affordable housing here in the Keys.

They just sold the last unit in the Woods Corner project.  Provided affordable home ownership for 16 low and moderate income Keys families.

Project ran about 100k budget due to the slowdown caused by credit crunch last year.   They are doing a community dinner event to cover it.  Please contact Rick at (305) 743-5624 for details.

Recommended: Cale Smith on Money

Cale runs an investment fund out of Islamorada Florida.  He writes on both local and national issues from an investors perspective.

Just published this update on the moves to raise additional capital by TIB (The Islamorada Bank), an local instuation with deep roots here in the Florida Keys. This issue has raised a fair amount of concern with hundreds of local shareholders and Cale puts it in perspective.

Worth following and connecting...
